- Unique, valuable and quality content with a back link profile of links from other authoritative websites.
- Relevant title tags of under 55 characters to avoid truncation by search engines that match user intent and align with what our audience is searching for.
- A unique meta description to set the expectation for what information is on the page itself and can help to improve click-through-rate, which may be key to improved keyword rankings. This brief, yet descriptive, copy should be no more than 50 characters and contain a call-to-action that encourages the user to select the result.
- Effective use of H1 tags, which are essentially the title or headline of the page and provide a broad overview as to what the page entails. They may include a keyword that is relevant to the content, and should only be used once per page.
- Craft descriptive file names and alt tags for images that are basically text versions of what one would see when they look at the image. This helps improve the likelihood of ranking in an image search and indicate exactly what the image contains.
- Supply alternate text for all images and compress images to cut down page size.
- Use descriptive link texts or anchor tags in as many texts as possible.
- Register with popular directories such as the Open Directory Project (ODP) at http://dmoz.org, Google´s Directory at http://directory.google.com, and Yahoo´s directory http://dir.yahoo.com
- Register with search engines Google at www.google.com/addurl and Bing at www.bing.com/webmaster/SubmitSitePage.aspx, which command for at least 95 percent of the web searches in the Western world (MacDonald, 2011).
- Provide connections to get a good Page Rank, such as sharing links with other leading sites in your category and have people talking about your site online, whether that's on Twitter, Facebook, or a personal blog. According to research done by Wordstream, there’s a definite correlation between the bounce rate of a page and its organic position. The higher a web page’s bounce rate is, the lower it’s ranked in search.
- Sign up for Google Analytics to examine the site´s web traffic.
- Add appropriate links to Wikipedia pages about content related to the topic.
- A quick loading site as search engines aren’t able to crawl as many pages in slow sites. This has an adverse impact on indexation.
